In the education blogosphere, talk of 'online learning' and the 'flipped classroom' has become nearly ubiquitous; as the tide rises, it seems everyone has something to say. At GameSpark we are particularly attuned to the dialogue, though - being enthusiastic creators of online game design courses - we certainly won't claim to be an unbiased third-party! Can video games effect global change? While that question may raise a few eyebrows, many are responding with a resounding "YES!" Enter Imagine Cup 2011, a contest that challenges students all over the world to solve pressing humanitarian problems using technology. Two of the three U.S. finalists deployed their software development and game design prowess to tackle clean energy and deforestation, respectively.

We couldn't be happier to see an influx of news stories emphasizing the importance of math, science, and technology education. It seems President Obama shares in our enthusiasm! Recently he rewarded TechBoston Academy – a high-performing 6th-12th school with ties to Microsoft, Google, and IBM – with a visit and a speech:

“I'm calling for investments in...educational software that is as compelling as the best video game. I want you guys to be stuck on a video game that's teaching you something other than just blowing something up.”
